About Kidney Stones

Kidney stones, or renal calculi, are solid deposits of salt and minerals, usually originating in the kidneys. While some stones can be a few millimetres in size and usually pass on their own with the urine, others can grow larger even into inches and usually require surgical removal. They may cause excruciating pain when they obstruct the urinary tract. Kidney stones are quite common in occurrence.

Dehydration, not having enough water everyday
Obesity
A diet with high levels of protein, salt, or glucose
Chronic diarrhea
Hyperparathyroid condition
Gastric bypass surgery
Inflammatory bowel diseases that increase calcium absorption
Taking medications such as triamterene diuretics, antiseizure drugs, and Calcium-based antacids

Chronic pain below the ribs, abdomen and groin
Blood in the urine
Vomiting
Nausea
Discolored or foul-smelling urine
Chills
Fever
Frequent need to urinate
Urinating small amounts of urine

The complete health history assessment and a physical examination is required for diagnosis of kidney stones. The most preferred test is ultrasound of the kidney, the Urologist may recommend other tests too depending upon the condition like, blood tests for calcium, phosphorus, uric acid and electrolytes, urine tests to check for crystals, bacteria, blood, and white cells and certain imaging tests like
abdominal X-rays, MRI scan of the abdomen and kidneys, Abdominal CT scan.

Medication
To relieve pain temporarily, relief narcotic medications are required. If the presence of infection is detected then the patient is given antibiotics. In case of small stones of a few millimeters, certain medicines can help in relaxing the muscles in the ureter which helps in passing the stone with urine. However, in case of larger stones, one of the following treatments may be necessary:

Lithotripsy
Lithotripsy uses sound waves to break up large stones so they can more easily pass down the ureters into your bladder and eventually get flushed out with urine.

Ureteroscopy
This method is used when a stone is stuck in the ureter or bladder, in this method the stone is removed using an instrument called ureteroscope. In this procedure, a small wire with a camera attached is inserted into the urethra and passed into the bladder. The Urologist then uses a small cage to snag the stone and remove it or high-intensity laser energy is aimed at the stone, the laser energy breaks the stones into small pieces, some of which are removed through a small bucket and the rest are flushed out through the urine.

Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL)
In case of large stones (say bigger than 2 centimeters) or too many where Shock Wave Lithotripsy may not be effective, the PCNL method is used. In this kind of surgery, a tube is inserted from an incision made in the back of the patient and stones are broken with shock wave or laser and extracted via a suction machine.

Open Surgery
This is the most traditional form of surgery which involves bigger incisions, longer hospitalization and slow recovery. This method is usually not recommended except in rare circumstances.
