Anal fissure is a cut or tear in the lining of the anal canal that extends to the anus. It can be painful and may bleed. The pain in this region can be quite severe even with a small tear as Anus is a highly sensitive part of the body.
Chronic constipation.
Straining due to large, hard or dry stool.
Prolonged diarrhea.
Anal sex or anal stretching.
Insertion of foreign objects.
Pregnancy and childbirth.
Infection in the anus or anal canal.
Decreased blood flow to the anorectal area.
Painful bowel movement.
Bright red blood in the stools.
Visible crack or tear around the anus.
Burning and itching.
Usually, doctor can diagnose an anal fissure by visual inspection of the anus or by gentle exam with the tip of the finger. If nothing is visible, gentle pressure onto the anal area will often result in pain if there is an anal fissure. Additionally, to determine the severity of the condition, the doctor may use devices like anoscope, colonoscope or sigmoidoscope to look into the tear.
In cases medication is not an option and a surgery is recommended.Surgical options include Sphincterotomy, lateral internal Sphincterotomy and laser surgery. Surgery usually consists of making a cut to a small portion of the internal anal sphincter muscle to reduce pain and spasms and allow the fissure to heal. A more modern laser procedure is to use a CO2 laser to increase the blood flow to the affected area using infrared radiation from the laser. Usually, the patient goes home the same day.
