What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a common condition that occurs when one of the major nerves to the hand, the median nerve, is squeezed or compressed. This pressure causes pain, numbness, and tingling in the hand and arm.

If pressure on the median nerve continues it can lead to nerve damage and worsening symptoms.

Heredity
Repeating the same motions or activities over a prolonged period of time
Activities involving extreme flexion or extension of hands
Hormonal changes during pregnancy
Diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and thyroid gland imbalance

Numbness, tingling, burning and pain primarily in the thumb and index, middle, and ring fingers Occasional shock-like sensations that radiate to the thumb and index, middle, and ring fingers Pain or tingling that may travel up the forearm towards the shoulder

Weakness and clumsiness in the hand—this may make it difficult to perform fine movements such as buttoning your clothes

Dropping things—due to weakness, numbness, or a loss of proprioception (awareness of where your hand is)

The doctor will conduct a physical examination by testing the sensations in your fingers and the strength of the muscles in your hand, the doctor may recommend tests such as:

X-ray. The doctor will recommend an X-ray of the affected wrist to exclude other causes of wrist pain, such as arthritis or a fracture.

Electromyography. In this test, the doctor will insert a thin needle electrode into specific muscles to evaluate the electrical activity when muscles contract and rest. This test can identify damage to the muscles controlled by the median nerve and also may rule out other conditions.

Nerve conduction study. A small shock is passed through the median nerve to see if electrical impulses are slowed in the carpal tunnel.

The surgery can be performed with two different techniques by the surgeon:
Endoscopic surgery. In this procedure, the surgeon uses a telescope-like device with a tiny camera attached to it to see inside your carpal tunnel, then cuts the ligament through one or two small incisions in your hand or wrist to relieve pressure on the median nerve.

Open surgery. The surgeon makes an incision in the palm of your hand over the carpal tunnel and cuts through the ligament to free the nerve.
