What is Anal Fistula?
An anal fistula is an abnormal tunnel which develops due to an infection, between the infected gland inside the anal canal or rectum and the skin around the anus.This infection results in pus formation that drains on its own or surgically through the skin next to the anus.Anal fistula can cause swelling and pain and can be quite discomforting causing skin irritation.

During your physical exam, the doctor will look for a fistula opening near your anal opening. He or she may press on the area to see if it is sore and if pus comes out to determine the depth and direction of fistula. Different methods may be used to help with the diagnosis, such as:
Imaging: An MRI or ultrasound test can also be used to better observe the location and depth of the fistula.
Fistula probe: A long, thin probe is guided through the outer opening of the fistula. A special dye may be injected to find out where the fistula opens up on the inside.
Anoscopye: Anoscope is a special tubular device used to look inside by inserting it into the anus.
Fistulas mostly need a surgical treatment for faster and effective cure. Depending on the condition, surgical treatment options include traditional open surgeries like :
