What is Hernia?

Hernia occurs when an organ protrudes through an opening in the muscle or tissue that holds it in place, it can be a serious and painful condition. Hernias typically occur in the abdomen between your chest and hips, but they can also appear in the upper thigh and groin areas.

According to the location of the hernia, the most common types of hernias are:
Inguinal hernia
Hiatal hernia
Umbilical hernia
Femoralhernia

Aging
Damage from an injury or surgery
Strenuous exercise or lifting heavy weights
Chronic coughing
Multiple pregnancies
Strain while passing stools
Obesity

Common Symptoms:
Bulge or lump in the affected area
Progressive pain in the bulge
Discomfort or pain
Pain while lifting something heavy
Increasing size of the bulge
Pain in passing urine or stools

To diagnose Hernia, the doctor will first perform a physical examination as it may be easy to diagnose as the bulge will mostly be visible. The doctor may ask you to sit, stand, cough to observe any changes in the bulge and may ask you questions about your medical history and lifestyle.
After physical examination the doctor will recommend imaging tests like abdominal ultrasound, CT / MRI scans or an endoscopy.

Herniorrhaphy (open surgery) is the most traditional surgery which involves making an incision at the affected area and pushing back the bulged tissue back to its position. The area is then closed with sutures or by stapling.
Hernioplasty (Mesh repair) is a kind of open surgery in which instead of stitching the muscle, a mesh is used to cover the hernia and stitched into the healthy tissues around it. This gives support to the damaged tissue and help them regrow.
Laparoscopic Hernia Repair is the most preferred and advanced procedure for Hernia repair. The surgeon will usually make two to four small incisions in the affected area. The surgeon will then insert a tube that has a small camera into the incisions to look into the internal position. The bulged tissue is pushed back to its position and a mesh is placed to strengthen the weakened muscle with staples and stitches. Incisions are then closed. You can usually go home the next day of the procedure and recover quickly. This involves less cuts, minimal pain, practically no scars and much faster recovery.
